When buying a property, you will need to find a conveyancer to take care of all the legal proceedings involved. And given that the process can be stressful at times, you’ll want someone you have confidence in and are comfortable working with.
Here are our tips for making sure you choose the right person to help you.
There’s no better way of choosing a conveyancer than through a recommendation from a friend or family member. If someone you know has had a good experience with a conveyancer and would trust them again, that’s a great starting point.
Like any professional, it always pays to make sure whoever you choose is a member of the necessary accreditation organisations. In particular, you’ll want to be certain that they are currently licensed to practice whatever it is you are hiring them to do for you.
With a conveyancer, if you don’t have that handy recommendation from a friend, head to the Australian Institute of Conveyancers. All of their members should have the necessary accreditations you’re looking for.
Property is a complex business, and you’ll want to make sure your conveyancer is covered in the event of anything going awry regarding your purchase. Make sure they have professional indemnity insurance.
There are many different kinds of properties, including commercial, industrial, retail and so on. Make sure you choose a conveyancer who is particularly, if not solely, focused and experienced in residential property.
An experienced, honest conveyancer will be upfront regarding their fees. They should be able to give you an accurate estimate as to how much the process will cost. This includes their time and the charges for certain permits, contract transfers and so on, known as disbursements. If a conveyancer doesn’t want to give you estimated costs, steer clear.
Once you’ve found your conveyancer, remember you are paying them for their service – so, don’t be afraid to ask any questions throughout the process.
